The First Mate bags a nice Cod for his Birthday in January aboard Sweet William
We had a short run out today, just the two of us, to celebrate the First Mate's 13th birthday.
We headed out late, to avoid the early slack water, and arrived at our chosen anchorage just as the tide began to ebb. It was great sport at first as we were plagued by smaller codling, but unfortunately nothing noteworthy came aboard.
We waited on anchor as long as we could, without wasting too much bait, until we approached the next slack water.
We headed offshore for a little winter wrecking session and struggled until the tide completely stopped running. We knew we were in a great spot, and as soon as we just sat pretty much motionless above the wreck, so we could drop right in amongst it without dragging and snagging, we could both instantly feel smaller fish pecking away, so knew the wreck was healthy.
We both reeled up, and changed to homemade two hook wrecking rigs with 10/0 meat hooks, 10" muppets and whipped on some monster cocktails!
We knew we literally had time for one more drop before the conditions changed, so I re-positioned the boat, charged up Henry's muppet with the UV torch, and sent him straight back down while I sorted my own gear out. He knocked into a lovely birthday PB cod for our efforts on the very last drop of the day. As we often joke, it's not over until we say it is
We headed straight back to watch the sunset whilst drifting behind the Tyne's south pier, whilst enjoying a steaming hot stew. As they say, the harder you work the luckier you get!
Even though it was hard going, you're only 13 once, and it turned out to be a challenging but lovely run out.
A sneaky run out in January aboard Sweet William to re-stock the freezer
Huge thanks to the lads for a run out today, with only 12 hours notice!
The weather this morning was calm, with a light breeze, incredible sunrise and flat seas. We were surrounded immediately by fins passing by on the way south, and then again as they headed back north shortly afterwards.
The fishing was slow but steady, with some nice codling coming aboard intermittently throughout the morning, and plenty of pan-sized whiting and big fat pouting for sport.
The wind began to pick up late morning, and by the time we reached slack water everything tailed off as expected.
We hauled anchor after a cracking day out to mark the first session this year, and headed for home shortly after lunch.
The First Mate bagged himself a nice brace of codling for his tea tonight, so he was pretty pleased with himself!
The bait of choice today were cocktails comprising monster cart wings from Billy's Fishing Tackle, squid and mackerel fillets.
We have availability this coming weekend 7th and 8th January 2023 (weather permitting); feel free to give us a call, or message, on 07740 706007 if you fancy a run out.
Sweet William see’s out 2022 with a Gateshead Millenium Bridge Tilt at Newcastle Quayside
Massive thanks to the lads for an incredible run upriver!
The Gateshead Millennium Bridge team, as always, were ready and waiting, exactly on time for the tilt.
Even the weather ended up being almost perfect...no wind, no rain and minimal currents allowing us to soak in the scenery in comfort.
We couldn't have planned a better to way to see out 2022 if we tried; Happy New Year and we look forward to seeing everyone in 2023!
Big Cod, Pollack and Mackerel in November at anchor on Sweet William
Massive thanks to everyone for a run out today. We headed off this morning to settled conditions, and a cracking sunrise.
We hit the first wreck to see if there were still any mackerel around for bait and found some solid fish, with very few smaller stamp coming aboard.
The wind immediately began to pick up, so once we had plenty of mackerel for bait (and the pan), we headed inside to calmer conditions to drop the anchor.
Shortly after setting the anchor, a good number of codling came aboard, including pollack, coalies and pouting, with the best being a cod weighing in on the digital scales at 9'11 lb for a new PB (and the biggest cod we've had onboard this season).
After a while, we hauled anchor and every time we tried a new spot another nice codling or two would come aboard, and then it would become slow almost immediately, so we kept moving throughout the afternoon.
A large pod of dolphins passed by heading north, while a seal bobbed around eating a decent sized fish close by which was nice to see
We headed back home to a lovely sunset. Another challenging, but rewarding day!
Monster Ling off the Tyne wrecks in late October aboard Sweet William
Huge thanks to Duncan, Archie, Niall, Amelia and of course Willow for coming aboard for a very late notice run out today.
We headed out to flat seas, zero wind and we were also blessed with the most incredible sunrise.
The first stop off for bait proved fantastic sport, with pollock, mackerel, coalies, whiting and pouting, but not a single cod coming aboard.
We thought we'd have a try on a few wrecks seeing as we were already a decent way out. It was pretty painful to say the least. A long spell over the course of almost a couple of hours with only Niall managing to find a nice cod, his new PB, at just over 3lb.
We kept persevering, and Archie found a nice pollock and a lovely cod for his new PB at just over 6lb.
Once we finally hit slack water and the drifts slowed, we put on the big wrecking rigs, and headed off to a favourite Ling spot...Duncan almost immediately hauled up a beautiful 18'11 Ling!
At this point the tide was starting to flood hard, and conditions again became very difficult. We called time and headed off on the long steam home, happy after yet another incredibly challenging but very rewarding day!
Ling, Codling, Pouting and Mackerel in late October aboard Sweet William
Massive thanks to Craig, Andy, Mark and Leon for a fantastic run out today!
We once again headed out to perfect conditions; flat seas, zero wind and a stunning sunrise.
Craig started the day off at the first wreck with a full house of 3 cod and 2 coalies, whilst Andy and Mike hauled in some lovely cod every drift. Leon showed no mercy to the shoals of mackerel and winkled out a fantastic fish which will be my breakfast tomorrow.
We had all been prepped up to the fact that there was a good chance that the glorious early morning conditions may take a turn for the worse later in the afternoon; after a group deliberation the unanimous decision was that 'if you don't go, you don't know'...so we made the most of the flat seas and headed well offshore to a less frequented wreck.
Mike pulled out a lovely Ling, which I believe was his first! Mark and Craig both had a good number of cod, amongst the usual suspects.
Mid-morning, and within minutes, the winds forecast for late afternoon arrived early...we quickly made the decision to head back inside and drop the anchor. It was steady, but hard going, with maybe half a dozen perfect pan-sized codling coming aboard.
When the rain kicked in, we lifted the anchor, and with wind against tide, we headed off to drift an inshore wreck; endless coalies, pouting, whiting and a good number of codling came aboard to end a challenging but rewarding day!
Sweet William finds some lovely Codling at anchor on the inner rough ground
Huge thanks to James, Dustin and the ladies for a great run out today.
We headed off into the sunrise to unbelievably still conditions, only for the wind to pick up almost immediately!
Thankfully we found the mackerel on the first stop; again a mix of solid fish amongst the smaller stamp.
We attempted a couple of wrecks and managed a decent haddock on the first drift, before the wind stopped play, so we headed inside to calmer conditions and dropped the anchor.
The guys found some nice cod, and there were plenty of big fat pouting, coalies and whiting for sport inbetween the better fish.
All in all a great day out for the time of year and the conditions!
Lots of Codling but not a Ling in sight today on the Tyne wrecks
Huge thanks to the great anglers who came aboard for the run out yesterday. We made the most of a break in the weather and headed out into the sunrise to flat seas, for what may well be one of, if not, the last wrecking session of the season.
The first stop off for mackerel proved unsuccessful, with absolutely nothing coming aboard whatsoever. We had to steam almost 9 miles before finding a shoal. The substantial proportion of mackerel were very small, with possibly a dozen large mackerel taken in total throughout the entire day.
We tried a good number of wrecks, and whilst it was steady, it was hard going. Amelia took the biggest fish of the day at 3.3 lb on the digital scales. Slippy did his thing and had a good number of fish on light gear and lures, including a nice little pollack. A good number of the wrecks had become snarled up with lost trawl nets during the recent storms, unfortunately rendering them pretty much unfishable.
We had a midway chill out for coffee and lunch, and headed inside to see what the rough grounds would produce.
On the first drift inside, perfect pan sized codling up to 2.5lb were coming aboard sometimes three or four at a time all around the boat. A good number of species including wrasse, whiting, coalies, and some enormous pouting also made a regular appearance so there was plenty of sport.
Let's not forget, the main objective today was to find Amelia a Ling...not a single Ling came aboard today...thankfully she took it in good spirit, but there's always next time...that's fishing
Ling, Cod and Pollack aboard Sweet William on the Tyne wrecks in October
We've made the most of some difficult conditions over the past week; with gusting winds, choppy seas and dirty water after the recent storms, it's definitely been a 'fishing not catching' experience for the more hardened anglers.
The craic has been great aboard, and the lads have been well prepared. Early starts in the dark at 6:00am, with that dawn chill creeping in, giving us the opportunity to see some incredible sunrises.
The mackerel are still here, with some solid fish mixed in amongst a smaller stamp, plenty of coalies for sport, and some lovely pan size whiting regularly coming aboard.
Decent cod are still elusive even on the wrecks in great numbers, with some nice ling making an appearance when the weather and fishing conditions allowed. The better stamp of pollock seemed to be making an appearance at dawn and tailing off throughout the day.
The inner rough grounds have started producing a good number of small stamp codling.
Fingers crossed for a good spell of weather over the coming weeks!
Some lovely Pollack, Ling, Coalies and Mackerel in September aboard Sweet William
September has pretty much been a write off from a weather perspective, but we've taken every opportunity to stick our nose out of the piers for a couple of hours here and there, when the conditions permitted.
We welcomed aboard a well known Toon legend for a short private charter for a couple hours, and managed to find some coalies and mackerel.
Daz and his son Hugo again came out on a short evening trip and we found plenty of mackerel, coalies, whiting, pouting and smaller codling.
Massive thanks to Paul for organising a short trip to celebrate Bobby's 14th birthday with James, Joel, Joseph and the kids. We had a brief hour's fishing and a run upriver to see the stunning Gateshead Millenium Bridge and Newcastle Quayside.
We finally had a decent day's fishing with Peter and the lads and lasses yesterday, even though the wind and sea conditions weren't great; the instruction was to find the late season mackerel if possible, which we did. Once we'd filled up all the tubs and boxes, we had a try on a few wrecks and some lovely ling and pollack came aboard. The decent stamp of cod are still elusive, with a smaller stamp of pan sized codling being the order of the day.
With all things considered, we've made the most of a difficult month; fingers crossed we get a good run over the coming weeks!
Plenty of Cod, Ling and Pollack to go around on the Tyne Wrecks
Massive thanks to Krzysztof for organising a day on the water with his party yesterday, who had travelled from London, Liverpool, Manchester and all corners of the country.
We headed off early to an amazing sunrise, and by the time we got to the first mackerel stop, we were shrouded in fog with a chilly breeze.
The conditions soon improved, and we were back to sunshine and calm seas.
Some lovely fish steadily came aboard throughout the day, with Adrian hauling up his new PB, with a ling weighing in on the digital scales at 11.13 lb.
The wind and swell just started to pick up towards the end of the day, so we called time and headed home allowing the lads plenty of opportunity to sort out their catch.
Great day and look forward to seeing them again soon.
Big Cod and Ling for the Barnsley Angling Club wreck fishing today
Massive thanks to Tog Edwards for organising a run out with the Keel Inn Angling Club who travelled all the way up from Barnsley. We also welcomed aboard Paul Harland and Stuart who was out celebrating his 70th birthday.
The weather was incredible, flat seas, sunshine and little to no wind.
We headed out and found the mackerel on the first stop, not in great numbers but enough to provide plenty of bait for the day.
Once we got to the wrecks after a considerable steam, Wayne knocked straight into a lovely brace of cod with a combined weight of 16.11 lb.
Steve winkled out a fantastic Ling of 14.15 lb.
Paul was quietly pulling in so many fish he ran out of places to put them all; we broke out the backup jumbo cool box, and before long he'd filled that aswell!
It was a pleasure to have a full boat of great anglers and the results speak for themselves. Keel Inn Angling Club performed well, but we have to say... "NOT BAD, COD DO BETTER"!
Sunset Cod, Ling and Mackerel for anglers from the Ukraine
It was a pleasure to welcome aboard Anatoliy and his Ukrainian guests a few days ago.
With everything going on in the world at the moment we were hoping for good weather to ensure they had a great trip and some relaxation, before returning back to Ukraine the following week.
The mackerel had dissapeared from our proven inshore spots and we had to work hard to find them, before locating a shoal slightly further offshore.
Once everyone had enjoyed some sport, and had plenty for the pan, we thought we'd treat them to a spot of wreck fishing. The First Mate rigged and baited them up accordingly, and we headed out for short steam.
A lovely ling, and a nice cod came up on the first couple of drifts.
We had an amazing steam home, with flat seas and a fantastic sunset to end the trip.
Cod, Ling and monster Pollack on the wrecks aboard Sweet William
When we get a call from Tamas and the lads (and lasses), we already know it's going to be a good day, and that's before we find any fish!
We headed out to sunshine, light winds, and a bit of a South Easterly roll.
We stuck close inside to find a few mackerel for sport, the pan, and bait and then slowly started to creep further out to deeper water and the bigger wrecks.
We rigged the guys up for wrecking and made the final jump offshore in search of a better stamp of fish.
Some lovely cod, pollack and smaller ling came up before we had to head home to get one of the lads back in time for the airport.
We enjoyed non stop sport on coalies, whiting, pouting and mackerel throughout the day.
The First Mate had a couple of drops on the final wreck, and winkled himself out a nice pollack weighing in at 7.1lb on the digital scales which is his new PB!
Sweet William finds Craig Barnes a lovely cod for his birthday
Lovely run out this evening for Craig Barnes birthday!
During the run out of the piers, we found ourselves surrounded by dolphins breaching and feeding in every direction.
The first stop produced any amount of mackerel for a bit of fun for the kids, the pan, and a few for bait.
We headed out to a few wrecks to find the birthday boy a nice fish, and he didn't hang about with a lovely cod of 7lb on the first decent wreck.
Plenty of solid codling all night, smaller ling, whiting, some lovely coalies and mackerel.
When the wind picked up, we headed back home; the birthday boy got the best fish of the day, and young Leon discovered that not only did he have sea legs, but he also loved boat life and decided he was ready for another run out tomorrow.
Sweet William finds cod, pollack ling and mackerel on the wrecks off the Tyne
Massive thanks to Matty for organising a run out with the lads today, and Michael and Andrea.
This was the lads first fishing experience, so it was in at the deep end, so to speak.
We headed out to calm conditions, rigged the lads up for some mackerel and hit on at the first stop, which produced a solid stamp for both bait and the pan.
The wind picked up soon after, creating some incredibly difficult conditons, especially for an introduction to wreck fishing.
This didn't stop Nathan, who despite everything, knocked into a fantastic 9.1lb ling for his first ever fish (other than mackerel earlier in the morning)!
A good number of codling also came aboard weighing in between the 3 to 4 lb range.
When the gusts proved too problematic, we headed inside to a few inshore wrecks whilst waiting for the wind to drop off again later in the afternoon.
The gamble to head back out to deeper water and half a dozen or so bigger wrecks paid off, with Andrea picking up a lovely pollack, and more good cod coming aboard.
There was a pretty much constant stream of mackerel, coalies, whiting and pouting coming up, often four at a time for sport.
Fantastic day out and look forward to see everyone again soon.
Cod and mackerel on an evening trip aboard Sweet William
Big thanks to Jonny for organising a long overdue catch up with Bri, Dave and Benji tonight!
The sun came out, calm seas, but a fairly gusty wind to contend with, so we stuck inside for a bit of shelter until it dropped away later in the evening.
Any amount of mackerel, whiting, pouting and codling providing non stop sport pretty much all night, with a good stamp of fish coming off a smaller inshore wreck towards the latter part of the evening.
Dave nailed the sweep, with Bri nipping at his heels!
Fantastic night topped off with a lovely sunset for the short steam home.
